Game Description
Woorden in de Weide emerged from a partnership with De Horizon, a primary school in Delft serving a community with a significant migrant and refugee population, many facing literacy challenges. To address the academic gap due to language barriers, De Horizon introduced educational tablet applications to extend learning beyond the classroom. However, existing apps did not meet the school’s need for an educational tool integrating proven learning methods, engaging children, involving parents, and aligning with the curriculum. 

Designed for first and second-grade primary school students, Woorden in de Weide offers an educational journey based on key principles: 

Effective Learning: The game employs text, images, and voice to teach new words, rooted in the cognitive development approach known as ‘met woorden in de weer’. Integration of BAK-lijst
Words: Incorporating words from the BAK-lijst (Basiswoordenlijst Amsterdamse Kleuters), the game focuses on the 3000 words children should learn in their first two years of school, organized into relevant categories each semester.
Content Management System (CMS): Our CMS empowers teachers to customize app content to match the curriculum. Using personal logins, teachers select BAK-lijst categories currently covered in class, ensuring relevant content for all students.
Repetition: Mini-games feature random word sets from chosen categories, reinforcing learning through repetition and enhancing comprehension.
Parent-Child Engagement: Encouraging parental involvement, select games foster collaboration between parents and children. This strengthens Dutch language skills and aligns parents with the educational journey, nurturing stronger family ties.
Physical Activity: To support overall wellness, the game prompts users to engage in physical activities every 15 minutes, bolstering cognitive and memory skills based on research.
Exploration: A daily feature encourages children to discover three hidden words on the startup screen, promoting curiosity and consistent practice.
