Game Description
Young people in (safe) shelters face many challenges. They deal with a lot of uncertainty and questions. How long will I be here? When will I see my friends again? Can I go to school? And what about sports? The Gate is an applied game specifically designed to give these young people the warm welcome they deserve. It allows them to discover information at their own pace in an engaging way. After all, which would you prefer: a white binder full of information or a 3D adventure game? Exactly.

The Gate consists of two parts: a user-friendly staff section where staff members create personalized player accounts, and the game environment where young people experience a game tailored to their real-life situations.

In the game, young people go through 8 game sessions in about 1.5 hours. The content of these sessions is based on stories from young people and staff at Sterk Huis. Numerous co-creation sessions were held to get to know the young people and staff, giving them the opportunity to contribute to the content of The Gate. Additionally, the (sub)goals of the commonly used ‘Veerkracht’ (resilience) method were integral during the game’s design.

The development of The Gate took over two years and is currently being rolled out to organizations across the Netherlands. The success of the project is due to the contributions of youth, the expertise and determination of Sterk Huis, the creativity and passion of Studio Rightside, and the funding from Kinderpostzegels and other sponsors.
