Penarium is a frantic 2D arena arcade game where you control the quirky anti-hero Willy. Willy is a kid trapped inside a sinister circus called Penarium. His only hope of ever returning to his beloved father’s farm is to run, jump and avoid an array of killer deathtraps while being cheered on by a sadistic crowd that is out for blood – his blood.
Penarium is set in a unique world; a sinister circus show where contestants, much like gladiators, are forced to entertain a sadistic crowd at the risk of losing their lives. Guide poor little Willy through this evil madness and become the champion of Penarium! Every kid wants to go to the circus but no kid wants to die in one…
Best Entertainment Game Design:Penarium has been designed to be “easy to learn, hard to master”. Willy’s abilities are clear from the get go; with only a move left, move right and jump button anyone who is vaguely familiar with platform games will be able to pick the game up instantly and have a go. However only those who are dedicated will be able to beat the campaign and become a master of the arcade mode.
Rather than creating gameplay variation by adding character abilities and thus additional controls, Penarium’s variation in gameplay comes from gradually introduced deathtraps, alternate level designs, and power-ups. These elements force the player to rethink their approach to certain situations within the limits of Willy’s capabilities.
Penarium is a game where you die, a lot. This is a part of the game’s core experience and nothing for a player of any skill level to be ashamed of. In order for players to accept these many deaths and hop right back into the game to try again we focused our design philosophy around a single mantra; “hard but fair”. We balanced all gameplay elements in such a way that no matter how dire a situation might look; there’s always a way out. This leads to players always blaming themselves for a death rather than the system.
Only when players feel like their deaths are their own doing will they be motivated to improve and retry. Whether you are listening to gamers playing Penarium at events, at home or when reading professional reviews the phrase; “just one more time” always returns.

Best Music & Audio:Penarium’s gladiator steampunk circus setting calls for both a strong soundtrack as well as lots of different sound effects to accompany the visual chaos onscreen.
Penarium features multiple thematic compositions all of them including custom recorded instrumental sessions by a number of professional musicians. These tracks have been split into snippets that trigger through FMOD integration at specific moments in the game creating an adaptive soundtrack that complements the gameplay.
