LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS Portal is an in-store installation that lets kids experiment with the five mighty Nexo Knights’ powers and abilities to discover their effectiveness in a number of playful training simulations. The installation uses a motion tracking camera and specially designed shield and wand controllers to follow and respond to the player’s movements, allowing them to attack, defend, and power up their character by maneuvering their equipment.
Best Applied Game Design: We were tasked to create a gameplay and experience that children would intuitively pick up. And from the very first moment NEXO KNIGHTS was presented, it became clear that the young users immediately understood that the physical wand and shield represent the gear of the knights in the game. The game switches between two modes -sword and shield- to react to different types of enemies. Once the players have mastered these maneuvers, they can use what they learned in the final boss fight, where a combination of both modes is needed. At the end of a playthrough, the players unlock a shield image that acts like a QR marker; using a separate mobile app, they can scan the shield and use it as a powerup in different games and on the campaign’s website.
The installation proved to be very attractive to the visitors of the store, both during the cool attract mode and the colorful and action-packed gameplay. The players spiced up the experience by striking their own cool poses and roaring battle cries while playing the game.

Best Art Direction: This game installation showcases a full 3D world, featuring 5 NEXO Knights, an army of lava monsters, the evil Jestro and his general Burnzie. Built from scratch, the in-game models are provided with all the details we know from the real toys. We created two levels for this game; the first looks like a holographic training arena, the second represents the ruins of a castle in a world made out of lava. The stunning action animations bring the the excitement from the NEXO KNIGHTS tv show to life. Special effects support the action and provide clear feedback to the players, complementing the action of the characters with a colorful spectacle that captures the imagination of the kids playing, and of those waiting around the installation.

Best Co-Production: Working in tight collaboration with LEGO Asia, MediaMonks helped materialize the first step in LEGO’s strategy to provide children with the opportunity to completely immerse themselves in the one-of-a-kind world of LEGO. Not only was NEXO KNIGHTS used to internally present LEGO’s project of merging the digital with in-store installations, it was actually launched in over 40 stores across the globe. Great deliberation was exercised when making choices concerning hardware and the control scheme. We faced the challenge of creating an optimal experience for the children while regarding the limited spaces available in the stores. In cooperation with the third party involved, installation-builder Kingsmen, we produced just the right equipment that served both the players and the store owners. MediaMonks delivered a plug-n-play digital package, a self-installing build, that provided LEGO with the opportunity to easily and quickly deploy the installation in the stores, ready to be enjoyed by little knights all over the world.
