Fragments of Him is an interactive narrative about a young man named Will and how his death affects the friends, family, and loved ones. It is a storytelling experience that has been compared by The Guardian to Gone Home, Firewatch, and That Dragon, Cancer. The gameplay is simple and allows players of all skill levels to progress to the story’s emotionally cathartic conclusion.
“The ease with which each character looks back at the moments they shared with Will, some painful, some unflattering, astonished me.” (Polygon.com)
All core game development was done in the Netherlands, with the support of MediaFonds, the Dutch Game Garden, and Creative Industries NL. Fragments of Him is currently available on PC and Xbox One, and expected to come to PS4 later this year.
Special Award: The game uses portmanteau storytelling techniques combined with non-chronological plot structures in a way that is rare outside of art-house cinema and the theatre, placing this on the cutting edge of video game narrative design. Reviews have been almost unanimous in praising the mature handling of complex topics such as sexuality, age, and particularly grief. These themes are handled with a level of sensitivity and nuance that is unique to this title.

Best Music & Audio: The voice acting of the four main characters in Fragments of Him was performed by professionals cast predominantly from the theatre, film, and television. This “wonderful choice of voice actors” (Gamespew.com) were selected from over 250 casting submissions. The mood and atmosphere of the events are further emphasised by the musical score created by a team that have previously worked on major titles such as the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

Best Co-production: The core Sassybot team of two people collaborated with Mata Haggis, an associate professor at NHTV, to create the narrative and design of Fragments of Him. In addition, we have collaborated with NHTV for a motion capture session to capture approximately 250 animations for the four main and many supporting characters in Fragments of Him.
The music and voice acting for Fragments of Him were the result of collaboration with PitStop Productions. Beyond producing several original musical pieces, this partner has also been responsible for delivering strong and consistent voice performance recordings of an emotionally powerful story spanning over seventeen thousand words, and giving each line the careful attention that it deserves.
In our efforts to bring the sensitive topics of Fragments of Him to a niche market that is moved by such stories we have worked together with ICO Partners. This resulted in a global presence of hundreds of articles and reviews in places like IGN, Vice, Polygon, and mainstream media like The Guardian, The Huffington Post, and De Telegraaf. ICO have also helped coordinate press interviews at major industry events such as GDC, Develop: Brighton, and Gamescom, and assisted in press support for more targeted events such as GaymerX.

Best Art Direction: Creating a distinct and coherent visual style for Fragments of Him was a process of trial and error. Significant time was spent on carefully constructing a unique and believable story that takes place in a variety of locations, from a diverse range of perspectives, and over a span of up to 30 years. Each location is filled with carefully researched items that perfectly fit the time period and the characters that live there, and that attention to detail extends to everything from the lampshades to the clothes they wear.
The resulting look of the characters and environments is built to both quickly convey character while allowing space to the player to invest their own emotions in the story. “The artistic choice and style of the game further aided my enjoyment, feeling experimental, it sold with its expressionist concept.” (Gamegrin.com)
