Beyond Eyes is an exploration puzzle game where players take the role of a young blind girl named Rae who leaves the safety of home in search of her missing cat. At first the world around her is completely blank but as the player starts exploring it slowly starts to reveal itself. Sound, smell and touch bring the world to life with beautiful watercolour visuals. But not everything is as it seems. The road ahead is full of unseen dangers and Rae relies on the player to help her overcome these obstacles.
Best Art Direction: The first thing that catches people’s eye when being introduced to Beyond Eyes are the unique watercolour visuals of the game. Inspired by impressionist paintings and children’s picture books, the graphics of Beyond Eyes are more than just a pretty picture. Since Rae wasn’t born blind but lost her eyesight in an accident as a toddler, her memories of the world are those of a young child, inspired by her favorite books and toys. Nice things become bright and colourful while scary things will be threatening and dark. Beyond Eyes has been nominated for the 2016 CEDEC awards and the TIGA awards for best art direction & visual achievement.

Best Casual Entertainment Game : Beyond Eyes was designed to attract a wide and diverse audience of gamers and non-gamers alike. The game is slow-paced and its simple controls make the game very accessible for people who have little experience with games. At showcase events Beyond Eyes always attracts an interesting audience, with parents bringing their young children and teenagers bringing their parents to the booth to experience the game. The pacing of the game and the feedback that Rae gives to the player as a response to their input is designed to create a strong emotional response from the player. Upon release, many players felt a strong connection to Rae and even cried during the game’s final chapters. Beyond Eyes was nominated for its design for the TIGA awards and the Emotional Games Awards.

Best music and audio: Sound plays a very important role in the way that Rae experiences the world and a lot of effort has been put in creating the sound effects that clearly communicate with the player what is happening in the scene.
Beyond Eyes’ unique style and visuals required a similar unique soundtrack. Composer Marco Alkema worked closely with Sherida Halatoe to create a musical equivalent of the dreamy watercolour style of the game. Inspired by impressionist composers such as Ravel & Debussy, he chose a classical foundation with the bright tones of wood instruments, violins and a single piano to enrich the emotional moments in the game.
The soundtrack can be found here.
Beyond Eyes was nominated for the TIGA awards for its audio design in 2015.
